SHS - Soil health surrounding former mining areas: characterization, risk analysis, and intervention

The residues resulting from coal mining activities, Sb-Au and W (N Portugal) deposited in heaps, represent a source of pollution in the surrounding soils and aquifers. Environmental pollution will be assessed to determine mitigation measures to restore the health of these resources. The sociological impact associated with the exploration of geological resources and the perception of risks and dangers for the population will be addressed.

CAVALI - CADEIA DE VALOR DO LÍTIO

The CAVALI project aims to develop up to the maximum limit considered as possible and feasible, the value chain of the production cycle of lithium-based batteries for electric vehicles, thus enhancing the maximization of the added value resulting from the exploitation of the national resources of this metal. Portugal is currently the country with higher proven Li reserves on the European continent. To attain this objective, the project focuses on the stages of the production cycle most likely to be installed in Portugal, despite the universality and originality of the research themes:

BETTER PLASTICS – PLASTICS IN A CIRCULAR ECONOMY

BETTER PLASTICS project aims to be the Mobilizing Project of the Plastics Sector in Portugal and leverage the transition of this sector to a circular economy. It comes from an initiative of APIP, Associação Portuguesa da Indústria dos Plásticos, which intends to mobilize the private sector together with National Authorities, Universities and Citizens to the objectives of European Circular Economy.

InTheMed- Innovative and Sustainable Groundwater Management in the Mediterranean

The main goal of InTheMED is to implement innovative and sustainable management tools and remediation strategies in five typical case studies, located between the two shores of the MED.

Development and implementation of geostatistical rock physics seismic inversion and geostatistical modelling tools within Petrobras' in-house modelling platform SIGEO (expected TRL7). 

Gasotransdelivery: Delivery vehicles of therapeutic gasotransmitters NO and H2S based on nanoporous materials

New materials to store and release NO and H2S will be developed to deliver them at target sites in the human body for therapeutic action. By modifying nanoporous phases with appropriate polymer layers, new delivery vehicles will be obtained. The porous structure, chemical nature and external surface of the nanoporous materials will be optimized to assure a good storage capacity, the stability of the molecules inside the pores, a slow release of the gas molecules and excellent biocompatibility.

SHAZAM - Seismicity and HAzards of the sub-saharian Atlantic Margin

Project SHAZAM addresses the intraplate seismicity of the Gulf of Guinea as a means to investigate the role of asthenospheric dynamics in crustal deformation. The instrumental monitoring of the moderate seismicity of the region will be revamped, as well as the geodetic monitoring of the crustal strain, in collaboration with the local institutions. The active tectonics of the region will be studied via geomorphology.
