On 29th May, 2026, the China-Portugal Science and Technology Forum on Climate and Energy took place in Beijing in China's Science and Technology Exchange Center.
The Forum counted on the participation of CERENA's researchers Leonardo Azevedo and João Narciso, as a result of the cooperation between China University of Petroleum-Beijing (CUPB) and Instituto Superior Técnico dating back to 2014. This collaboration led to the "AI for Climate Energy" laboratory in 2024, co-led by Liao Zonghu of CUPB and Leonardo Azevedo.
This Forum aims to mobilize innovation for global sustainable development, focusing on themes such as green energy, vertical AI applications, and AI infrastructure. It aims to build a new international cooperation mechanism and a model for China–Portugal green technology collaboration.
Zhang Guangqing, vice president of China University of Petroleum, highlighted how we can work together, conducting high-level research to address key challenges, including climate change, energy security, and carbon emission reduction. The cooperation between the two countries, besides creating more opportunities for student exchange and joint problems, will be key to achieving the proposed goals.
Leonardo Azevedo highlighted how this partnership is already shaping international collaboration: "It is worth mentioning that Portugal in Europe and China in the East have achieved remarkable success in the development and utilization of renewable energy and electrification, setting a benchmark for the international community."
