On 19th June, 2026, Amílcar Soares was awarded the title of Emeritus Professor.
The ceremony began with congratulations to Amílcar by Técnico’s President, Professor Rogério Colaço, who presented an overview of Amílcar’s career.
Maria João Pereira, the president of the Department of Mining and Energy Resources Engineering (DER), highlighted the importance of this distinction, not only at a personal level for Amílcar but also on an institutional level, as Amílcar is the first professor of DER to receive this award. Amílcar was always a strong voice for DER, bringing awareness to the importance of mining engineering, a field that is sometimes overlooked, and this award is the perfect summation of his work for the field over the years.
Leonardo Azevedo, CERENA’s Coordinator, gave a more personal testimonial, being a former PhD student of Amílcar. Leonardo highlighted Amílcar’s passion for work and his out-of-the-box ideas that keep on challenging his current students. Finally, Amílcar thanked his family, friends, and colleagues, giving an overview of his scientific journey over the years.
